another decent series but newswipe is never as consistently funny as screenwipe was. the same points about rolling news, media generated 'scandals' and accuracy tend to be repeated a lot which gets boring. i'm pretty sure the last series covered the exact same topics. i suppose charlie wants to be more than the guy who rips into tv shows but that's when he's at his best. bring back screenwipe!

Harry Hill's TV Burp is a prime-time, Saturday night family comedy show on ITV1. Charlie Brooker's Newswipe is a late-night Tuesday show on BBC4. The budgets and and thus the size of production teams of the two shows is beyond compare, and I'd say the show is much more demanding. Saying 'Chiiiiips' in a funny voice doesn't lead to the same sort of argument over appropriate content and copyright as Brooker's team will have to confront on a regular basis.

Having met him a couple times I can safely say that the alcoholism is completely authentic. That being said I agree that it's unnecessarily played up when he appears on a Brooker show. His first appearance back on Screenwipe had him slouching and holding a bottle for no reason. I have a suspicion that it may be something the producers of the show encouraged rather than Brooker or Stanhope themselves, to cultivate his persona. I take issue with the MMR jab comment. Japan and America have already paid out in court cases where a link between the vaccine and a new type of regressive autism was proved. The MMR controversy is always sighted as an example of bad science. It's brilliantly done but it says more about people than government. Civil liberty is a myth, always has been. Orwell was no prophet, he looked at society of the past and particularly of the early 20th century and saw a never ending theme. The saddest aspect of the book is his spot on analysis of the proletariat who can't see beyond the mundane and 'wake up'.

When Doug came on he was doing his show and mentioned Alexs documentary about Bohemian Grove (U.S. summer camp for world leaders and captains of Industry to party and stage mock human sacrifices). ive seen that doc and it has the same eerie music as Dougs piece always dose!! it sends shivers down my spine. Anonymous sourcing has abit more to it in the UK than the US though. The UK has the strictest libel laws in the western world(while america's are loose), if a UK outlet is to print a story on an anonymous source's information(which editors hate) and it causes damages to a person or organisation its libelous. You hit the nail on the head there. I love domestic rats, but for a show that has a tradition of forcing contestants to eat live insects in order to win tasks to be condemned for the actions of a couple of contestants who simply wanted a bit of meat is ridiculous. Either it's all ok, or none of it is. I'd say none of it, personally. It's all totally unnecessary and trash.

God that rat thing was pathetic. They're vermin. Its legal to poison them, burn them, hit them with sticks if you really want to. At least they ate it after it was dead. And I get the impression that a large amount of the show relys on parts of dead animals and killing insects. Maybe we can all hope that the rat incident has created such a scandal about the show that they may have to stop making any more series of it in case anything like that should happen again.

I will play devils advocate by saying no. Scientologists will pay until they are broke however in the long run Christians pay 10% of the earnings for many years in the long run that's a lot since there are more chistrians in a family than scientologists on average. And when it comes to the history of Christianity, they have done much worse. But in present day, I do agree that they are dangerous BUT not as dangerous as Islam especially in the middle east. Christianity is similarly a pile of bollocks and I do believe a lot of Christian organisations may cynically manipulate people, but the way the Church of Scientology withholds most of its teachings until you've payed for them and been a member for years, makes you cease communication with any sceptical loved ones, perpetrated the biggest inflitration of the US government in history etc makes them seem more sinister than any major modern Christian churches IMO.

The biggest problem I have with this documentary is that it made me want more and when I look around for other gaming programs its a vast wasteland of awful. You have Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation, but I've been already religiously following it. AVGN is fun, but I also religiously follow. Yeah I noticed the comment on games stories too, and you're right, there are good ones out there. But he only said that it's often a game's weak spot, and think of all the games that DON'T have a good story.. It's just a first episode, if a series gets made, perhaps that will be more to your taste? ;)

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure Charlie plays games and this episode is brilliantly funny. I just didn't think it was a particularly good take on games, like Newswipe was on the bullshit sesationalism of the news or Screenwipe was on the drivel of TV. Like any genre of entertainment, games are a sea of shit where the occasional gem bobs to the surface. I just thought he characterised the sea of shit very well, but didn't really show any gems.

I do indeed, its hard to miss the similarities in bitterness and misanthropy between the two. And yes, its casual and broader, but that doesn't mean that some of the best games of any of those genres need to be missed. And what about the part where its said games don't have decent story? Really? What about Planescape Torment, Baldours Gate or Mass Effect or Knights of the Old Republic or Legacy of Kain? All of these, and others, where characterised by great narrative and great voice acting.
